How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is situated on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated on the outside of the transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control fuel, timig and boost. It also sends signals to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to connect with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu has to be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also the location of the camshaft so that it can activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This means that the Crank Shaft is not in line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate the possibility of a chain stretch or jumpy chain link in the upper timing chain. The code will not appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing can be a bit difficult since there are two pins for the connector and they have different functions however the best method to test it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is fully operational, it should read approximately 1000 ohms. If you are having problems with this sensor, look for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll i had a big cut in power like the engine is running out of gas or injectors aren't firing any more. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, three were soaked with gasoline and the fourth was unclean. I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole and when i start the engine without sparks, the 3 with gazoline jump out. The fourth one remains closed. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ I got 0ohm. I think the issue is in another location.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it runs fine with the G28 connected. However the intermittent misfire issue persists at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of -49c even when i unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is zero.

I don't know what to do. I believe that I've all other possibilities out. But i am afraid I may have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please let me know! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is similar to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate a spare in a wrecking shop or a parts store. Testing them is easy by putting your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's side). They should be infinite ohms.
